  3. Time stopped at a stop

A stop time is how long a bus stood still near a stop, with a range.

We measure it from consecutive vehicle positions. It is measured, and it always comes with the least and most time the bus could have stood there.

How we work it out

  • A bus is stopped while each position stays close to where it began and no two positions are too far apart in time.
  • The stop time is first to last position in that run. That is the least time. The most time adds the gaps to the positions on either side.
  • The place is named after a stop only when it is close to that stop. Otherwise it says the bus stood somewhere that is not a stop.
  • Short stops are not reported.

What it cannot tell

  • Positions arrive only every so often, so a short stop for doors is not seen.
  • We cannot tell a bus waiting for riders from one held by a signal beside the stop, or a driver’s scheduled break at the end of a line.
  • If a bus stops reporting, the run ends there. We do not say it left.

Which words are safe

  • Illustrative example, with round numbers: "A bus stopped at least 10 minutes near a named stop" is measured.
  • We do not say why it stopped.

Where the numbers come from

  • OC Transpo live vehicle positions
  • STO live vehicle positions

Method version and change log

A published month never changes. If a method is revised, past months keep the method they were worked out with.
