How we got this number

On time at this stop, by hourEstimated

Estimated: these come from the final predictions made before each bus arrived, not from where the bus was seen.

What it measures

How often buses were on time at this stop in each hour of the day. Two rules are shown side by side. The OC Transpo rule allows up to one minute early and five minutes late, and is counted at timepoints only. The other counts a bus within five minutes either way of the times riders see, at every stop. The bars use the second.

  • MeasuredWe saw it happen.
  • EstimatedModelled, shown with a range.
  • ExplainedHow it is worked out, in words.

Where it comes from

  • EstimatedSettled final predictions for bus arrivals at this stop
  • MeasuredPublished timetables, dated

How we work it out

  1. We take each bus arrival at this stop over the last four weeks, with the final prediction made just before it.
  2. We group arrivals by the hour they were scheduled, weekdays apart from weekends.
  3. On the riders’ rule an arrival counts when it is within five minutes either way of the posted time. On the OC Transpo rule it counts only at timepoints, up to one minute early and five minutes late.
  4. An hour with too few arrivals shows no number and says so. It is never shown as zero.

Worked example

Illustrative example, rounded

One stop, one hour, weekdays. The numbers are made up to show the steps. They are not from a real hour.

  • Within five minutes either wayCounts as on time8
  • Outside thatEarly or late2
  • On time8 of 10, about 80%

How sure we are

These come from final predictions, not from where each bus was seen, so they can differ from the headline figure, which is judged from bus positions. The page shows how many buses each hour holds.

Limits, and what would change it

  • The two columns can cover different arrivals, so they are not one rule measured twice.
  • Early and late count alike on the riders’ rule; on the OC Transpo rule early is stricter.
  • An hour with few buses can swing a lot.

What it measures

How often a bus stood at this stop for a minute or more, and how long it typically stood and how long it stood on the longer visits, in recent weekdays.

  • MeasuredWe saw it happen.
  • EstimatedModelled, shown with a range.
  • ExplainedHow it is worked out, in words.

Where it comes from

  • MeasuredOC Transpo and STO live bus positions
  • MeasuredWeekdays we captured in full

How we work it out

  1. We look at buses that were seen at this stop on trips that ran. A bus that stayed in place across at least three positions, about a minute, counts as standing.
  2. The first and last stop of a trip are left out, because a bus waiting at the end of the line is resting, not boarding.
  3. We show the share of visits where a bus stood, and how long it stood on a typical visit and on a longer one. Each is a band, rounded outward, with the time between positions added.
  4. A stop and hour with too few visits or days shows not enough data, never zero.

Worked example

Illustrative example, rounded

One stop, one hour, many weekdays. The numbers are made up to show the steps. They are not from a real stop.

  • Visits seenBuses seen at the stop in that hour200
  • Stood a minute or moreVisits where the bus stayed in place60
  • Share that stoodStood divided by seen30%
  • Buses standing hereAbout 30%, range 25 to 35, usually 1 to 2 min

How sure we are

This is measured from positions, not estimated. The range is wider when few days were captured.

Limits, and what would change it

  • Positions come about every half minute, so a stop shorter than about a minute is not seen.
  • A bus held to keep to the timetable counts as standing: the positions cannot tell holding from boarding.
  • The first and last stop of a trip are not included.
